So I had an idea that bottles in the size of magnum, Nebuchadnezar existed until I delved deeper. Here is how it plays out:
Magnum 3l
Double Magnum 1.5l
Jeroboam 3l for Champagne, 4.5l for bordeaux
Rehoboam 4.5l
Methuselah 6l
Salmanazar 9l
Balthazar 12l
Nebuchadnezzar 15l
Melchior 18l
Solomon 20l
Sovereign 22.5l
Goliath 27l
Melchizedek 30l
Ancient wine was stored in leather skins, to amphora (large clay pots), and then glass-making came into existence. Diversity existed in the sizes of storage of wine, until the French, in the 19th century brought the 750ml as a standard into the world of wine. Why the biblical names? who started this? Unclear other than the symbolism attached in the grandiosity of these powerful historical figures.
A collectors investment: Large turned out to be proportionately pricier than its equivalent in smaller bottles. Interestingly and understandably, the surface volume ratio in larger vessels allows slower aging and as a result delivers more complexity in a wine. These bottles are also a rarity and because of this, they make good for a wine collector as well as an investment beyond the brownie points gathered showing off the severity of one's wine connoisseur-ship.
